Windows Admin Center incorporates the classic graphical administration interface of Windows Server and facilitates the operation and smooth integration of Azure services such as Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery and Azure Security Center.

The combination of Azure Arc and Windows Admin Center allows the entire hybrid infrastructure to be controlled as well as monitored, for example, using the new event viewer and gateway proxy support for Azure-connected scenarios.

security

Microsoft is significantly increasing the level of security with Windows Server 2022. For example, businesses can operate securely in the face of threats when multi-layered Secured Core security capabilities that extend across hardware, firmware as well as the operating system itself protect your business's infrastructure, data and applications from attack, spying, theft and manipulation.

  • Secured-core Server combines security for hardware and firmware with the operating system. An important component for this on the hardware side is the Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0), as this provides secure storage for cryptographic keys to enable certificates to be digitally signed.
  • Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) helps detect and prevent zero-day vulnerabilities as well as network attacks and data leaks.
  • Preventive protection mechanisms detect malware at an early stage and repel it.
  • End-to-end encryption can be easily implemented to prevent data from being intercepted on untrusted networks.
  • Secure connectivity based on encrypted data transmission with Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 and HTTPS.
  • Windows Defender Exploit Guard can be used to prevent intrusion attempts targeting the host.

CAL (Client Access License)

A solution for small businesses with broad IT needs to get their first server up and running or to modernise an existing server. The Essentials Edition includes a licence for up to 25 users and 50 devices and limits the hardware equipment of the server to 10 physical cores for the server CPU. Ideal for small and medium-sized enterprises with purely physical or only minimally virtualised environments that require comprehensive functions in their IT landscape, including at distributed locations. Ideal for businesses of all sizes implementing challenging IT workloads in highly virtualised and software-defined data centre environments, requiring advanced storage, virtualisation and application deployment.

Essentials Server is now even more powerful

Microsoft is making substantial changes to the scope of the Essentials licence in Windows Server 2022. While a maximum of 25 users and 50 devices are still allowed to access the server, the CPU used is now limited on the hardware side. The Essentials licence accordingly supports a maximum of one CPU with a maximum of 10 cores, while the memory restriction of 64 GB that still applied in Windows Server 2019 Essentials has now been dropped. In addition, Essentials may continue to be used as an RDS host as well as a Hyper-V host; however, there is a maximum of one virtual license provided for this. In terms of functionality, however, the Essentials Edition is now significantly more powerful, as Microsoft no longer restricts the feature set. Data deduplication and storage migration services are therefore now a normal part of the Essential Server's range of functions. This is why the Essentials Edition also reports as Windows Server 2022 Standard after installation.


Don't miss the boat
for the upgrade

For Microsoft operating systems, we recommend that you check your own service life against the mainstream support provided by Microsoft. During this period, Microsoft provides all necessary security updates and bug fixes as well as further developments of the software. However, the switch should always be made when the software is in extended support and Microsoft only supplies security-relevant patches. Microsoft also offers a direct and technically very simple method for this with its familiar in-place upgrade. The only requirement is that the version numbers do not differ by more than two releases. Currently, Windows Server 2016 and 2019 can be easily upgraded to the new Windows Server 2022. Keep an eye on support times.
